Benefitting from Numbers - Getting Group Discounts
By Lydia Glider-Shelley / January - February 2012

Whether you choose activities for your company's group outings, want to plan an unusual party, or just have a large group of friends who like to get together and do fun things, many outings help people save money over what a couple or an individual would pay.

If you are like most people and appreciate getting the best bang for your buck, group discounts can help turn an ordinary plan into an adventure. In most cases, if you have a group of ten or more people, you can negotiate a group discount. In some cases, the minimum number of participants may be as low as six or as high as twenty to thirty, depending upon the activity and policy of the establishment in question.

If you don't quite have a large enough group to take advantage of other discounts, there are web sites where you can join a pool of other interested parties. Groupon.com is one very popular choice with versatile options. If you would like to fly on a private jet for the price of what a coach seat would cost you on a commercial airline, www.socialflights.com is a must-visit web site.

Here are a few other ideas:
Palm Beach County: The South Florida Science Museum in Palm Beach boasts a planetarium and aquarium, in addition to the science exhibits. On January 14 in the Planetarium, there will be two different laser light shows: "The Doors" and "Pink Floyd, Best of Echoes." Look for "Dino Roar Night at the Museum" on January 27. It offers a discount for groups of 15 or more. Call 561-832-2026, visit the web site at www.sfsm.org for more details.

The Palm Beach Zoo in West Palm Beach has multiple discount options, including daily performances of the "Wings Over Water" bird show, as well as a variety of special events. For more information, or to make recommended reservations in advance, call the group department at 561-533-0887, ext. 229., or visit its web site at http://palmbeachzoo.org.

Broward County: If you fancy a night out at the theater, the Sunrise Civic Center in Sunrise offers a free ticket for every ten tickets purchased. There are two shows scheduled for the month of January -- the comedy "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" on the 8th and a concert called "Alter Eagles", a tribute to the Eagles, on the 27th. For more information, call 954-747-4646.

Do you enjoy deep-sea fishing? Try a four-hour charter fishing excursion aboard an 85-foot yacht. Fishing Headquarters is in Fort Lauderdale. The boat goes out daily -- morning, afternoon and evening -- and the regular price is $35 per person, which is all-inclusive, but you must bring your own meal. Its unadvertised special is $325 for a party of 12. If you have a party of 10 or more, it is recommended that you reserve a few days in advance. Call 754-214-7863 or visit the web site at http://fishingheadquarters.com for more details.

Don't forget to charge your cell phones and cameras, so you can record those special moments. It's also a good idea to check the weather before going to outdoor events over the winter months, as it can sometimes get quite nippy.
