You, too, can make a difference

What if one day you woke up and said to yourself:

  • I am going to do something good for others by forming a charity and
    creating a fundraising event that raises money for sick children.
  • I am going to raise money by hosting a Whiffle Ball Tournament as the
    flagship event.
  • I will coordinate food trucks, live entertainment, and a Home Run Derby.
  •  People will love it!

Now imagine telling your altruistic and lofty plans to your significant other and family and friends …And that is where the story usually ends.

The naysayers will quickly rain on your parade by reminding you: (1) you have no experience starting a charity; (2) you do not have a team of organizers or volunteers to help you run this charity; (3) it will take dozens, if not hundreds of hours, to set up this charity; and (4) you have a full-time job with three young children.

But you are not Todd Rodman. 

Todd Rodman is the president of Sports Chiropractic and Natural Health Solutions. Todd lives in Parkland with his wife Lorin, the “do-it-all” wife who writes a lifestyle and fashion blog, “Styled as a Mother” and his three children, Jack (11), Reese (9) and Austin (7).

The Rodmans are the family that wear elaborate costumes for Halloween, constantly post funny videos to social media, and hold impromptu driveway musicals for their neighbors’ enjoyment. They are Parkland’s version of the social media darlings, the Holderness Family.

In 2017, Todd, in conjunction with the Jason Taylor Foundation, organized the Inaugural “Whiffle Blast,” which took place at Pine Trails Park in Parkland.

Todd, a college baseball player, came up with the idea for a Wiffleball tournament while playing a pick-up game with his family. Now going on their fifth year, Whiffle Blast has raised over $125,000 for children battling cancer and other pediatric emergencies. Every penny donated goes toward charity.

Whiffle Blast, a Whiffleball round-robin tournament, may be the most fun charity event you will ever attend. It is super competitive, but all for a good cause. Last year, 30 teams battled it out to be crowned champion.

Who knew Wiffleball could be so intense?

Having no experience planning a fundraising event, all while running a successful business, the first year was challenging at times. Todd and Lorin cobbled together their plans on scraps of notebook paper.

They relied on grassroots efforts to promote the event and procure entertainment and raffle items.

They spent sleepless nights calling restaurants for gift certificates, coordinating food trucks, making DIY signs, and baking cookies to make sure the event was not a failure. Even their children contributed by getting their friends to work as volunteers.

Friends and family were so inspired by Todd’s desire to give back to his community, that they also chipped in and tapped their connections to make the event a success.

When I asked Todd why he started a charity he said, “Giving back to our community is so important to me because I understand what it’s like to be on the other side of the fence. I was inspired by the people before me who I look up to in the philanthropic community to pay it forward.”

Todd’s advice to anyone who wants to give back to their community: “Just do it. Yes, it is hard. Yes, it is a lot of work. And yes, it is the single most rewarding thing you can do with both your time and money. Your community will rally around you – they will not let you fail.”

Be inspired by Todd. Anyone can make a  difference – it is never too late. Do not get caught up in negativity. Do not be afraid to take chances. Parkland / Coral Springs is a resilient community that rallies around each other. To quote the movie Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come.” Todd Rodman built “Whiffle Blast” – that is his community legacy. What will you build? What will be your community legacy?

It is an honor to serve you as your District 96 State Representative and I look forward to working with you. November was a busy election season and I would like to congratulate all the winners of the elections. I look forward to working with the City Commissions and residents in District 96, which include Coconut Creek, Parkland, a majority of Margate, and the north and east areas of Coral Springs.

Since the election, we have been very busy setting up the district office, which is located at Coconut Creek City Hall at 4800 Copans Road, Coconut Creek, FL 33063. We have a wonderful team including Beth Lerner, who is our Legislative Aide, and Lisa Librizzi, who is our District Aide. Beth has many years of experience working in the State Legislature and brings a wealth of knowledge to the position. Lisa comes from a corporate background and has a wealth of experience in systems organization and customer service. You can contact our team at 954-956-5600. In November, we worked on getting the office and staff set up, and I attended the new member orientations and organization session. In December, we will be given our committee assignments for the 2020-2022 Legislative Session and in January our first committee weeks begin. Throughout the process, we will be providing updates and information on what we are doing in the district. As 2020 comes to a close, we have much to reflect upon. Each year comes with its challenges, and 2020 was definitely no exception. In the midst of a pandemic, we are also facing serious economic and health challenges. Apps can help keep you organized

November is about being thankful for everything: Health,
family, & friends.

This time of year can be stressful and challenging for many because they need a bit of organizational direction.

As an organizer, I’m constantly asked by friends and acquaintances how to get organized for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. My answer is simple: Plan ahead.

Let’s talk about Thanksgiving. As a result of the current pandemic, this November may not necessarily be about big Thanksgiving get-togethers, but you still may be hosting and you’ll need to start to get organized and plan.

Starting early and not waiting for the last moment is key.

1. Make lists of what you need to purchase. One of my favorite things to do is to use the Amazon Alexa app to create “shopping lists.” Not only can you create any type of list with Alexa, but you can tell her what to put on it. So as you are planning that recipe or hoping you’ll remember to buy a bouquet of flowers, just ask her to put it on your shopping list. This eliminates the need for a paper list (that inevitably gets left on the kitchen counter..lol) and it’s automatically populated in your Alexa app.

Another option to manage your to-do list is called TeuxDeux. It’s simple and doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles…try it!

2. Consider using an inventory app like Sortly. There are quite a few home inventory apps out there, and keeping track of your items and where they are in your home can be a tedious process. If you know what you have in your home and where it is, taking out what you need for any holiday or occasion will be a snap. You’ll be happy to avoid the headache of trying to find the things that you need at the last minute.

3. Thanksgiving brings us to the holiday season and everyone’s time is so precious.

To keep track of all of your online purchases, try an app that syncs with your Gmail app called Arrive. Not only will it track your online orders from Amazon and Walmart, but it will also give you status updates with UPS, USPS, FedEx and DHL.

No more searching through emails!

4. Trying to locate your holiday decorations can be challenging if you don’t have a “home” for them all. Consider organizing these items in clear, plastic, labeled bins. This will keep everything neat, tidy and you’ll always know where to find what you need.

Holiday tips to manage diabetes

November is National Diabetes Month, and the Center for Disease Control reports that 29.1 million people, diagnosed and undiagnosed, are challenged with this disease in the United States. As a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) I focus on wise food choices throughout the year. As the holiday season unfolds, I want to give people the tools to eat well and wisely.

In planning menus and choosing items from those often served at holiday meals, diabetes can afflict the meal planner as well as those dining at the table.As the host or hostess, it is important to include options for those who may have challenges with what some folks dismiss as “just a little sugar.” In putting together a menu of traditional dishes, which tend to be carbohydrate heavy, remember that to control diabetes it is essential to manage carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrates are necessary nutrients that are the fuel for energy— however if diabetes is a factor, carbs must be monitored. Carbohydrates are starches, sugars, and fiber. Now let’s look at some of the dishes typically found on the Thanksgiving menu.

Snacks and Appetizers:
These often include cheese and crackers, dips, or cocktail-size frankfurters. Good- for-you options to substitute are fresh vegetables in place of salty snacks such as chips or pretzels. Limit the cheese, which can be high in fat and calories, and ditch the baby frankfurters for lean lunchmeat rolled in lettuce leaves.

Side Dishes:
Folks do love potatoes — mashed, scalloped, or sweet. It is not the potato itself that gets the bad rap; it’s the additions of butter, cheese, milk, sour cream, and other goodies. If making potatoes, opt for low-fat milk or plain Greek-style yogurt in place of cream and sour cream. If sweet potatoes are on the list, cut back on the amount of butter, sugar, and marshmallows. Sweepotatoes are a real power food, but if pairing the sweets with the previous list, the power punch is knocked out! Include roast or steamed green vegetables, baked squash, and a tossed green salad.

Now turkey stuffing is in the side-dishcategory — this too can be more wholesome if you use a little less butter or margarine, use sodium-reduced broth, and whole grain bread or brown rice, depending on the type of stuffi ng you are making.

 

Main Dishes:

Turkey is the star attraction on most tables, however, it can also be joined by ham or roast beef. These are protein foods without any carbohydrates. Limit servings to 3 to 4-ounce portions. If turkey is your main-dish choice, go for roasted turkey and not deep- fried. Choose turkey breast and remove the skin. If gravy is on the must-have list, limit to a couple of tablespoons or half a ladle of gravy.

Dessert:
I know this is where so many slip up. Don’t deny yourself dessert, choose half-size portions, forgo caramel, chocolate, and whipped toppings. If eggnog is in the picture, pour a juice-size glass or make the beverage your dessert in place of cake or pie.

These are some of the tools and guidelines for good and healthy eating during the holidays. Diabetes is serious but by making wise choices as the host or guest, folks can eat well, enjoy the season, and keep well-being goals in sight.
