Thanksgivings remembered, recipes revised

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. As a child in the 1950s I would wake up early and smell the fire my father had made in family-room fireplace, right next to our kitchen. My mother was already in the kitchen making stuffing. She had to begin early because we had lots of aunts, uncles and cousins coming over for dinner A 22-pound turkey was a bare minimum.

My mother’s stuffing was a combination of breads, herbs, vegetables, butter, sauteed chicken livers, and stock. I usually would get downstairs as she was mixing everything together. I was her taster. I would tell her if there was something needed. She was very careful about any mixture because she told me you can always add ingredients but you can’t take them out.

She would stuff both cavities and if there was any left, make a bowl for my sister and I to eat later. Thanksgiving aside, stuffing is on my top-ten favorite food list.

Everything after that was pretty typical of Thanksgiving: Jellied cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans with crispy onions with cream of mushroom soup.

We did have a relish tray that had olives, black and green, celery, radishes and green onions (scallions). Basically, I made most of my dinner out of stuffing, smothered in gravy. Dessert, of course, was traditional pumpkin pie with lots of whipped cream.

Years later, after I started college, I began to cook. Our dorm had a small kitchen. The food in the college dining hall was passable, but anytime I could get away with my own cooking I did.

After while other girls joined me. Everything was very simple then because our tiny dorm kitchen had limited supplies of utensils, pots and pans.

By the time I got married I was cooking up a storm. I had my own kitchen and all the handy gadgets I could get my hands on. After we had children, I needed something to do. I began talking to other car-pool moms about my love of cooking. had fantasized about having my own catering business.

Fortunately, one of the mothers ask if I had any interest in catering their Christmas holiday party. After that I got one phone call after another. My catering career was launched.

I knew that as much as I loved my mother’s food, there were foods out there that were a bit more sophisticated and inspiring, like Beef Wellington. I also have to thank my customers because I learned to cook lots of foods just because I said I could. Thus, began my in-depth reading and collecting of cook books. And I began to put my own spin on most recipes.

For example, returning to Thanksgiving, canned cranberry sauce is okay, but cranberry relish is several delectable steps above the gelatinous tube of magenta-colored mixture containing high fructose corn syrup, water and citric acid. Oh yeah, and some processed cranberries. The relish is very easy and can be created with ingredients customized to your family’s tastes.

Another food I added to my own Thanksgiving dinner was a Corn Timbale. It looks beautiful and tastes delicious. It’s a combination of corn, cheese, eggs and cream. As a caterer, I cared very much about presentation. If food looked delicious, most likely it would taste delicious. My catering career lasted 13 years. We moved to Chicago and I became a consultant for one of the city’s top caterers. (Note from husband: George Jewell took one look at photos of my wife’s catering creations and hired her on the spot.)

After my husband and I moved to Florida, I started teaching cooking at the Williams-Sonoma at Boca Raton’s Town Mall. What I found was there were lots of people who loved to cook but were intimidated by the process or the ingredients. I think I succeeded in taking some of the fear out of that!

I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as I do.

And feel free to add or subtract as you feel comfortable.

 

Bread Stuffing/Dressing

  • 2 lbs. bread, cubed (white, wheat, French) I save up old bread for weeks before the holiday.
  • Let dry out on a cookie sheet. If you keep it wrapped, you’re going to end up with penicillin.
  • 1 1⁄2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 4 to 5 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 3 onions, chopped
  • 3 to 4 cloves garlic, peeled and halved
  • 1/2 cup parsley (I use curly leaf)
  • 1 lb. fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 chicken livers, deveined
  • 6 to 8 cups chicken stock
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1⁄2 cup milk
  • Sage, dried or fresh (if using dried start off with 2 Tbsp. If using fresh chop leaves from 4 to 5 stems.)
  • Kosher salt and fresh pepper to taste
  1. Put all bread crumbs into a large bowl.
  2. Take the neck and heart from the turkey cavity and add to chicken stock. Heat
    to a simmer.
  3. Skim if necessary.
  4. Melt 1⁄2 stick of butter in pan over medium heat and add half of the
    onions, celery and all the garlic. Sauté about 10 to 12 minutes or until they are just translucent. Do not allow the garlic to brown. If you see it brown, take it out and add to bread crumb mixture.
  5. Add the uncooked onions, celery, and parsley to the bowl of bread crumbs. Add half of the chicken stock. Cover with plate or foil. This allows mixture to become moist.
  6. Using the same pan that you sautéed the onion mixture in, add 1⁄2 stick
    butter and 3 Tbsp. olive oil and heat on medium high until it is very hot. Add the mushrooms. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and allow to brown before mixing. Mushrooms will give off their liquid unless you cook them quickly. After they are browned, put into a wooden mixing bowl and chop very fine. You can also leave the mushrooms whole.
  7. Using the sauté pan again, add 1 Tbsp. butter or oil and sauté chicken livers until just cooked through. Chop well and add to mixture.
  8. Add another 2 cups of the chicken stock to the empty sauté pan and allow to simmer to pick up all the browned bits. Mix thoroughly. Cover again. Mix the eggs into the milk. Add this to the bread crumb mixture. Season with salt and pepper.
  9. You will have some stock left as well as some butter and oil. I do this because you may have started with more bread crumbs.
  10. I taste this mixture for seasoning. Even though there are fresh, uncooked eggs!
  11. Stuff your bird or put the dressing into a casserole.
  12. For the extra dressing, bake at 350 degrees for 1⁄2 hour covered with foil and 1⁄2 hour uncovered.

And remember, you may omit the chicken livers or mushrooms depending on family tastes. My husband wasn’t a fan of either when we married 46 years ago, but accepts nothing less now.

Corn Timbale

  • 12 ears of fresh corn
  • 6 eggs, mixed well
  • 1 large onion, chopped fine
  • 5 Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 cup fresh bread crumbs
  • 1 cup gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 3⁄4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne
  • Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper
  1. Remove kernels of corn with a sharp knife and using a food processor, process 6 to 8 pulses. Pour into a bowl and add the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Butter an enamel baking container and place parchment paper on the bottom. Pour mixture into the container and place container into a larger pan, wide enough to add boiling water to go a third of the way up on the sides.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown on top, approximately 1 hour.
  4. Take out of water bath and cool completely. Run a knife around the edge of timbale and turn out onto a platter.

I like to sauté brussels sprouts and put around the edge of the timbale. The green and yellow make a nice presentation.

 

Cranberry Relish

  • 1 12oz bag of fresh cranberries
  • 1 3⁄4 cups sugar
  • 1 granny smith apple, peeled, cored,
    and cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup dried cherries
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  1. Add all ingredients and bring to a boil on top of stove.
  2. Cook on a simmer until all the skins have popped, approximately 1⁄2 hour.
  3. Let cool completely.

Serve in glass bowl.

Food trucks on the move again

While food truck festivals may be temporarily out of fashion due to the pandemic, many local trucks have regrouped, revamped, and are re-energized.

While restaurants were shuttered during Phase I and partially shuttered during Phase II here in Florida, the nature of food trucks allows them more flexibility tocontinue operating.

Rob Adler, (aka “The Weekend Concierge”) and founder of the websites Weekendbroward.com and FoodTrucksFortLauderdale. com promotes live music and local events with food trucks.

He says, “Food trucks are micro-businesses that are easy to start up, but have presented a challenge during the pandemic. There are still business opportunities in catering events or in “on-consignment,” but these can be economically risky because you don’t know how much food to purchase in advance.”

“Food trucks should be your mobile ad for a catering business or restaurant,” he says. “You need to be creative and make the right connections. Very few trucks can survive with only weekend events.”

“You can’t just park on the corner and think people will flock to your truck,” he says, noting that before the pandemic hit, 500 food trucks were registered between Miami and West Palm Beach. “You have to be a hustler.”

According to a recent economic census, 5,970 food trucks were operating nationwide in 2018, nearly double the 3,281 in 2013. The average sales per food truck establishment was $226,291, with average sales per employee at $86,212.

Along with California and Texas, Florida was in the top three in food truck sales in 2017 registering $98.3 million.

With numbers like this, it’s no wonder that buying, owning, and running a food truck is an appealing prospect to many.

Transplanted New Yorkers Peggie Ann Blain and her financé Bruno Maxino (aka Chef Max) have been running Bruno’s Catering Food Truck in the tri-county area for the past eight years.

Adler is their agent and Blain says, “Rob is a well-loved guy and very popular with the food truck set. He has a heart of gold and we all love and respect him.”

With an eclectic menu, “international meets New York flair,” it’s a selection anyone from any walk of life can taste and enjoy, says Blain.

Their signature dish is one Chef Max created – a griot burrito, combining flavors both from Haiti and Mexico with pulled pork, slaw vinaigrette, and black rice drizzled with a homemade 15-way honey mustard BBQ sauce.

In 2018 they won an award for the best food truck at the iHeartRadio awards for serving the freshest “eats on the streets.”

As part of their reinvention, Blain and Maxino plan to open a brick and mortar location on NE 13th St. in downtown Ft. Lauderdale.

They have provided catering to many essential hospital workers during the pandemic, including at Broward Health Medical Center and JFK Hospital in West Palm Beach.

Likewise, Coconut Creek residents Daniella and Michael Jaimes are first-time food truck operators. Owners of American Limo, they had the opportunity to branch out and purchase a new food truck and planned to start their Burger Town operations in mid-October.

While their specialty is Colombian burgers made with a pineapple sauce, onion, bacon, and a variety of dipping sauces, they will offer regular American-style cheese and bacon burgers as well as hot dogs and quesadillas.

Another specialty is their Colombian sweet corn, known as maicito, served with mozzarella cheese, potato sticks, and sauces.

“We will start with the basics and branch out from there,” says Danielle Jaimes.

Another husband and wife food truck team is the Mediterranean-themed Tornado Food owned by Natalia Navarro, a former medical office manager originally from Argentina and her husband Achraf Zariat, a former fl ight attendant for Tunisair.

The two met and married locally and decided to launch a business together.

“We wanted to be entrepreneurs,” says Navarro. “We had a restaurant in Miami that we closed due to the pandemic.”

With some financial assistance and $3,000, they were able to start their first food truck selling a tornado potato – a spiral cut potato on a stick fried to a golden brown and fully loaded with cheese sauce, bacon, etc.

Chef Max

Their specialty is the home-made potato along with lamb, chicken, or shrimp gyros. They make all their sauces, including hummus and tzatziki sauce.

They also operate a second truck offering mostly American style food, including Aloha hotdogs (hotdogs topped with pineapple, red onions, jalapeño, and a sweet ansour sauce), Tornado Mac & Cheese, and shredded beef sandwiches.

Pre-pandemic, they’ve traveled throughout the state to many events, including the NASCAR event in Homestead, Balloon Festivals such as the hot air glowing balloon festival in Orlando, Car and Coffee in West Palm Beach, and the Facetime. Lauderdale Air Show.

However, what Navarro says really draws the crowds is their “Dragon Breath,” a 16 oz. cup of giant fruity puffs, blasted with liquid nitrogen and covered in chocolate syrup, a favorite for kids who can blow out dragon breath, which sells for $10.

“The kids love it,” says Navarro. “Sometimes there are more than 50 kids in line, with no end in sight.”

“Food trucks are no longer a novelty,” says Navarro. “We’re two hard-working immigrants trying to make a living and doing our best. It’s a lot of work, but we’re happy.”

Parkland Mayor: Christine Hunschofsky

Writing this, my final column as Mayor of Parkland, is bittersweet. Serving you, the residents of Parkland, as your Mayor, has been the honor of a lifetime.

My journey to serve our community has always been one that I had been passionate about but never planned. Back in 2012, our then District 2 Commissioner Jared Moskowitz  decided to run for State Rep. I had been active in our community serving our Education Advisory Board for 7 years and covering the City Commission for almost 10 years. When this opportunity presented itself, so many friends and neighbors thought I was the best choice and encouraged me to run for the seat.

While I had been continually active in the community and followed the city government very closely, I had never in my life planned or anticipated running for office. With my family’s encouragement I decided to enter the race…to step into the arena. I remember thinking I would have the opportunity to be an example of the kind of elected official I always wanted my boys to see. A sense of panic overcame me that night as I thought to myself, what have I done…what now…

Now, when I look back almost 8-years later, I could never have anticipated the experiences I had, the lessons I learned, the pain I witnessed, the challenges I faced, in addition to the hope I was given, the care and compassion I saw, the joy I experienced, and the wonderful people I met in our community.

I am proud of what we have accomplished from fighting against school boundaries that would have excluded students from attending our neighborhood schools to effectively advocating for additional elementary school capacity. With your support, we secured land for future city needs and limited that development.  We approved building fire stations, expanding the library, and Pine Trails Park, making improvements to infrastructure, many city amenities, and so much more; it has been a busy 7+ years.

We have also had our share of crises, from the flooding in June 2017, Hurricane Irma in September 2017, the current pandemic, and the devastating and horrific mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Throughout it all, our community has demonstrated what it means to show up for one another. While there is division on social media, out in the real community, on the ground, there is so much care and compassion. We had neighbors helping neighbors during the hurricane, and in its aftermath, and so many who reached out to help the Florida Keys that were devastated during Hurricane Irma. We had multiple residents doing collections to help the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. After the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, our community stood up for one another, helping families, teachers, and students. While our community changed forever that day, the heart of who we are did not. Even in the current pandemic, we had residents making masks for first responders and supplying food to those in need. We have an incredible and resilient community, which is what makes our city such a special place to live.

Congratulations to our new City Commission and your willingness to serve. I wish you much success as you continue the work of keeping Parkland the wonderful community it is and the place we all call home.

5 Ideas for Halloween During COVID

Due to the pandemic, halloween will look different this year. Instead of the traditional dressing up and trick-or-treating, we will be celebrating Halloween safe at home. 

There is no reason to cancel Halloween, instead, alter your plants to fit the health and safety precautions for your area.

Here is a list of 5 ideas to still have a spooky spectacular night:

  1. Decorate your house with pumpkins, lights, and spooky sights. Go crazy with orange, black, and white decor.
  2. Spooky Halloween movie marathon- grab some popcorn, candy corn, and get cozy. Time to gather all your favorite Halloween spooky movies with family.
  3. Halloween Hunt- create clues and scour the scene for items featured in a photo scavenger hunt. Make it a competition or work together as a family. Make sure you have candy prizes!
  4. Drive-by-Trick-or-Treating- have people drive by and gently throw candy at costumed kids in their yards like your car is a parade float. Blast some music and have fun lights around your car to get into the spirit.
  5. Zoom Halloween parties- have a dress up party via zoom. Pick a theme, plan a zoom-like fashion show to show off your creation.

Try a ‘good enough’ parenting style

Everyone wants their children to grow into well-rounded, healthy, and connected individuals. Looking back, your parenting style has probably changed since the spring. Screen-time, playdates, and having food delivered were probably looked at a little differently. It may sound odd, but as a therapist, I help families build a “good enough” parenting style to help support children. The concept was created by English pediatrician Donald Woods Winnicott to help push back against the rise in striving for a perfect, flawless parent. These impossible goals are something we can start to let go of in 2020.

Break the on-demand cycle
Remember when you scheduled every after school moment with stimulating activities for your family? Do you recall that sinking feeling that you were failing as a parent? Well, you are good enough, just not perfect. At the start of the pandemic, you rallied resources and filled your kids’ lives with baking, board games, and Pinterest-worthy fun.After a while, you realized that you were beyond exhausted from the added demands of scheduling every single minute seven days a week.

Then the whining began with the dreaded, “I’m bored!” Here’s the beauty of the good enough parent: Your job is to offer a safe foundation for your child to explore their environment. In plain terms, that means THEY have to fi nd the fun activity (Within limits!). Once we help our kids learn that their free time is theirs to craft, they learn how to play independently. That might mean they discover a love of reading, gardening, swimming, painting, music, or astronomy. The opportunities are endless.

Grow closer by fostering independence
Parents strive to provide their kids with a safe, happy childhood. We often fall in the trap of creating only fun, successful times for them. When children are too afraid to fail, they struggle to find their place in the world. Being a good enough parent means that we create an environment where children are allowed to try things with the possibility of failure. By learning how to fail, we support children in building good sportsmanship, ethics, compassion, empathy, and most of all-motivation to keep trying. Let’s all strive for a good enough school year!

Coincidence or Godwink?

A couple of years ago, I read a book titled, “When God Winks at You” by Squire Rushnell, and the concept has remained with me.

Godwinks (Rushnell’s term) are coincidences that, when we think about them, make us pause, smile, or just say aha. An example we probably have all experienced is when you are thinking about someone and the phone rings, and it is that person.

Another example is when you lose something important and just as you are giving up on ever finding it – it turns up in a place you think you searched thoroughly before.

To me, Godwinks are messages the universe is sending me when I am open to receiving that information. Well, this morning I received a Godwink.

For the past few months, my columns have focused on my feelings and behaviors during the pandemic. I am still staying at home and still only dreaming of getting on a plane to see my family in New York.

I have tried to find positive things to do, but life feels a bit bland and sad. And then this morning I received a strong message, or as I would term it, a Godwink. The first message (Godwink) came as I watched the “CBS This Morning” show. One of the daily segments is when the anchors discover/find a story, news segment, or video and want to share it with all of us.

This morning, co-anchor Tony Dokoupil read about a recent poll centered on the Coronavirus’ effect on peoples’ feelings. He stated that according to the poll, two-thirds of Americans believe they are better people due to the pandemic and 70 percent said they learned a lot about themselves as a result of the pandemic. Hmmm.

The second message (Godwink) came to me in email form. I received a group text from a friend that I read just after the morning show ended. The gist of it is in this one stanza of the much longer message: “Let’s put some color in our grey…And despite everything, we must continue to enjoy with serenity this time we have left.

“Let’s try to eliminate the afters…I’m doing it after…I’ll say it after…I’ll think about it after…So let’s leave nothing for later because still waiting we can lose the best moments.” Two positive and strong statements on making the most of our life during this time filled with frustration and waiting. A Godwink certainly meant for me.

I am in need of an attitude adjustment. I must again learn to appreciate and love the time as it is now. I have worked to make my days better, fuller and more fun. I have received the love of a wonderful puppy and been reawakened to the beauty of the world through his eyes but I have not gone the extra mile to welcome this time into my emotions. Instead, I have resented it,  gotten angry, and felt cheated. So I projected this dissatisfaction and have not been the optimistic and hopeful person I certainly can and have tried to be.

So I am now beginning to think about how to give myself an attitude adjustment. What are the positives that have come out of all these months? How can I take those positives and gain a new perspective on my life under COVID-19? I need to lose “The Afters.” My goal this coming month is to understand how this time has made me better and learn more about myself. My goal this month is to be happier, more giving and more positive. I’ll let you know if the Godwink worked its miracle.

Coral Springs man speaks, writes on family’s triple tragedy

Limelight – an intense white light created by heating a cylinder of quicklime, used for dramatic effect in 19th century theater.

As an actor and producer, Coral Springs resident Joseph Velez, 57, never expected that one day his own family would be the focus of such an unforgiving glare.

With film credits ranging from Robert De Niro’s 2019 “The Irishman” to the
2010 locally filmed A&E TV series “TheGlades” to the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things,” Velez was used to seeing himself on-screen playing fictional roles.

But in a kind of twisted triple indemnity motivated by insurance fraud, Velez found himself in the middle of three very real deaths — one his own mother — all allegedly plotted by his half-brother.

They were deaths with a gun, a plastic bag, and the killer’s own two hands. They were deaths with a common motive — insurance money. They were deaths of people all known by the suspect, the half-brother, who is now serving a life sentence, but only for one of the killings, that of his own 15-month-old son, Prince.

Velez, a former Marine who served three tours in Afghanistan during Operation Desert Storm, is writing a book and producing and hosting a podcast about the cases.

The story unfolds over the span of a decade, beginning on Mar. 19, 2003, when a young mother, Shawn Katrina Mason, was shot and killed in her Manassas, (Prince William County) VA., condominium.

Five years later, in Nov. 2008, an older woman, Alma Rosa Collins, also of Prince William County, was found dead with a plastic bag over her head. The death was ruled a suicide but Velez doesn’t believe it.

Alma Rosa Collins was his mother.

Police had one person in custody after the killing of Mason, the half-brother of Velez, Joaquin Rams, born as John Anthony Ramirez. He was released for lack of evidence.

Prince Elias McCleod Rams was found dead in Manassas in October 2012, at the home of his father Joaquin. Rams and the boy’s mother, Hera McCleod, were divorced and a court had granted Rams unsupervised visits.

Rams was Mason’s ex-boyfriend. He was the son of the second victim and the father of the third. It was later learned Rams had life insurance policies with his name as the beneficiary of all three of the victims.

Hera McCleod, now an activist for children’s rights in Seattle, wrote in a
blog, “Trusting the Virginia police ended up being one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Instead of helping to keep my family safe, they helped my abuser.”

It’s inconceivable to Velez that authorities ruled his mom’s death a suicide. Velez and his mother’s sister, Elva Carabello, strongly dispute the finding.

In the death of Collins, Rams collected insurance of more than $150,000. He had taken out three policies totaling half-a-million dollars on his then, new-born son, and was receiving Social Security benefits from the death of Mason, the mother of his first son, Joaquin, Jr.


Rams, now 48, was arrested in 2013 for the murder of his son, Prince. After a 12-day bench trial, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He is serving time in the Red Onion State Prison, a supermax facility in Virginia. Authorities are taking another look at the other two deaths.

For Velez, writing a book and producing the podcasts has been a journey tougher than his three tours in Afghanistan.

The book is titled, “Shadows Of My Soul – Objects in the Mirror are Closer Than They Appear.” The podcast for iHeart Radio, Spotify, and Apple iTunes is called “The C.O.D.E. (Cause of Death Explained) of Silence.”

Velez also founded The B.A.R.E. Project (Butterflies/Angels/ Rescue/Echo) to honor his mother, Alma Rosa Collins, Mason, and Prince McLeod.

“We must honor them and the countless other innocent lives that have been taken that never had a chance to speak out for help,” he says.

Navratri

South Florida is home to a large Hindu community, and every fall, various celebrations fill the local temples and community centers.

Navratri (nine nights) marks a vibrant and joyful Hindu celebration, and this year, it will begin on October 17th. The festival is a celebration of the divine feminine principle Shakti. One of the core beliefs of Hinduism, pluralism, exemplifies that the divine can manifest itself in different forms as is exemplified during Navratri.

The first three days are dedicated to GoddessDurga, the next three to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth; and the last three days are for Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of learning and wisdom. The last day, the tenth, Dussehra, is for celebrating the triumphs of good over evil.
During the evenings, Hindus get together and dance. Garba, Gujarat’s traditional folk dance, is performed, and so is Dandiya-raas. In Garba, dancers move in a circle around a picture or representation of Durga (creative energy).

Garba involves vigorous movements such as jumping, fl ailing the arms, rhythmically clapping, twirling, and stepping in sync. Dandiya-raas involves two circles moving in opposite directions. The outer circle moves counterclockwise while the inner circle moves clockwise. Each woman strikes her dandiyas, wooden sticks, with those of the woman in the other circle, then they both move on.

Dancing helps express joyousness, togetherness, and reverence for womanhood. Many women fast and pray throughout the nine days to Goddess Shakti. Many also place books, instruments, and tools before Goddess Saraswati as they wish for her to bless them with talent, knowledge, and inspiration.

Although the celebrations this year will be different and may not be as community-centered as previous years, Hindus will still feel together and spread spiritually as they celebrate on their own to show persistence against the current challenges, like Durga’s victory over Mahishasura.

I’m a proud #girldad

On February 23, 2013, my life changed. I gained not only a beautiful baby girl but also a best friend. I am a #girldad.

After the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant, ESPN anchor Elle Duncan shared on SportsCenter a story about meeting Bryant for the first (and only) time. Bryant pridefully spoke about his three girls and his excitement over the possibility of having a fourth.

Duncan asked Bryant if he wanted more children. Without hesitation Bryant said, “I would have five more girls if I could. I’m a GIRL DAD.„ The hashtag “girldad” was born and quickly went viral. I was one of the millions of dads who reposted a picture of my daughter, Harper, and I playing basketball. In honor of Kobe, I used #girldad.

I am lucky enough to have two children, a girl (Harper, age 7) and a boy (Hudson, age 3).

I always knew I would have a great relationship with my son, as most dads do. Like many dads, however, my relationship with my daughter is just “special.”

I brag about my daughter, ad nauseam. Pictures of her are peppered throughout my office. My friends sometimes roll their eyes at me when I tell yet another story about the time Harper did “fill in the blank.”

The truth is, I am just so darn proud of her. In my eyes, she is perfect in every way.

Looking back, however, I have been the proudest of her when she and I do something together that defies stereotypes. In those moments, I know I am raising her the way Bryant raised his daughters.

Bryant, one of the most competitive and ruthless athletes of all-time, did not see gender as a barrier to his daughters having the same opportunities and privileges as boys.

In decades past, dads of girls interacted differently with them than dads of boys. Dads were expected to do traditional “boy activities” with their sons and “girl activities” with their daughters. Society placed limits on what fathers and daughters should do.

Boys played sports. Girls danced and cheered.

Boys went camping. Girls had tea parties.

Boys lead. Girls followed.

Parkland, Broward County, the world, in fact, is full of dads who have amazing relationships with their daughters. These are dads who post a myriad of pictures on social media of them with their daughters at concerts, sporting events, or catching fish. These are dads that are not embarrassed to perform in “Dancing Dads” at Dance Theater, or that take time off from work to watch their daughter perform in the school play.

Many of these dads feel the same way about their daughters’ limitless potential and want their daughters to know that they are supporting them every step of the way.

#Girldads want their daughters to be fearless, brave, assertive, take chances, make mistakes, and strive for greatness in everything they do–athletics or otherwise.

#Girldads are proud of their daughters for being true to themselves regardless of what others think they should be.

#Girldads embrace the fact that they get to experience the best of both worlds.

#Girldads always let their daughters know that they can accomplish anything–the world is their oyster!

A typical day with Harper includes dancing in the family room as well as practicing free throws.

One night we may watch Goonies or The Sandlot; the next night, The Princess Diaries or Troop Beverly Hills.

It is just as likely Harper and I will film a TikTok video or throw a football in the backyard.

The best part about living in Parkland as a #girldad may be Parkland Rec Sports. Don’t believe me? Attend a Friday Night Lights football game. #GirlDads are just as intensely cheering for their daughters as they are for their sons. The girls have a blast. The parents have a blast. It may be the best draw of Parkland – #girldads galore!

Many of the dads coach their son’s teams and their daughter’s teams. These #girldads get to the field at 5:00 p.m. and don’t leave until 9:00 p.m. They treat all their children equally.

Parkland Rec Sports is shattering stereotypes of who is an athlete.

By encouraging Harper to engage in traditional boy activities, she is gaining traits that will propel her ahead as she moves forward in life: Self-confidence, willingness to take criticism, strong sense of focus, humility, resiliency and the ability to learn from setbacks, and a sense of belonging, just to name a few. These traits are equally important to boys and girls.

A bunch of Parkland dads take their girls camping multiple times per year. Camping builds character and takes them out of their comfort zone. Some of the best conversations Harper and I have ever had are from lying in our tents discussing life or laughing about the time there was no dedicated shower area on site so I washed her off with a hose (Shh, don’t tell mom). These dads will tell you camping with their daughters is just magical.

Parkland #girldads are some of the best around. You’ll notice them now – they are the ones holding their daughter’s hand
as they walk through the mall, belting out songs in the car with the windows down, or volunteering for a role in the Enchanted Tales with Belle attraction at Disney World.

Dads – don’t be afraid to play dress up and catch with your daughter. Embrace the societal shift. Gender doesn’t dictate what she can and cannot do. Just be proud of her, empower her to lead the way, and support her choices. Hold her hand tight and tell her you love her, as there is nothing better than being a #girldad.

Rewind: Keeping seniors connected with loved ones during times of isolation

The Alzheimer’s Association has partnered with the State of Florida’s Department of Elder Affairs to keep seniors connected with loved ones during social isolation. Through Project: VITAL (Virtual Inclusion Technology for All), senior-friendly tablets from engagement technology provider iN2L will be distributed to nursing homes and assisted living facilities (ALFs) throughout the state.

“There are more than 580,000 people in Florida living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Approximately two-thirds of the people living in ALFs have some form of dementia,” said Alzheimer’s Association Florida Regional Leader, Angela McAuley. “Project: VITAL has provided the Association the opportunity to extend our reach to not just those living with dementia, but to all seniors in Florida who are vulnerable to the negative effects of social isolation.”

During the pilot phase, the Alzheimer’s Association will work with 150 care communities, 40 of them in South Florida, supplying two tablets per community, as well as virtual training on how to use the equipment and platform. The tablets are preloaded with software programming from iN2L, enabling residents to connect with their loved ones via video chat with a simple tap on the home screen.

The tablet further fosters connection with family by creating individual profiles for every resident, with the added ability for family to add personal photos and videos to those profiles for residents to view whenever they like.

Also included on the tablet is an easily-personalized library of applications that supports cognitive, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual wellness for the ultimate person-centered engagement experience.

“We are excited to be working alongside the Alzheimer’s Association to provide the technology and tools for Project: VITAL.” said Lisa Taylor, iN2L CEO. “We know how important meaningful connection is to older adults’ health and well-being, and during COVID-19, it is absolutely critical.

“Our tablets are a connection care package for senior living residents, equipped with one-touch video chat tools for virtual family visits, as well
as over 1,000 content applications to connect residents to their interests and passions – all designed to keep them healthy, happy, and entertained during these uncertain times and beyond. We are thrilled that more seniors in the state of Florida will benefit from this solution,” she added.

“We’re hoping the use of these customized tablets will facilitate critical connections with the families, especially during these times – but, we want to use them for sustainable models for the future,” said Richard Prudom, Secretary of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. “We want to ensure the safety of our vulnerable seniors while keeping their loved ones connected.”

The first 50 tablets were shipped on Friday, April 24 with the remaining 100 tablets on May 1.
